Therapy with Onnie Baldwin, LCSW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?

I do not accept insurance. I believe this allows the work to stay focused on you and your goals, rather than diagnoses or treatment limitations set by insurance providers. Many clients find that private pay offers greater privacy, flexibility, and depth in the therapeutic process.

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions range from $200–$250 per session, depending on the type and length of therapy. Sliding scale options may be available based on income and current circumstances. If cost is a concern, we can discuss options during our initial conversation to see what may be possible.

What is the first session like?

The first session is not a traditional intake and is not focused on diagnosing. It’s a conversation — a chance for us to move more intentionally and begin understanding what’s bringing you in. We’ll talk about your concerns, your history, and what you’re hoping for, while also seeing if we’re a good fit to work together. Therapy works best when there’s trust and connection, and the first session is about beginning to build that.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment without charge.

  • If you cancel within 24–48 hours, you may reschedule within the same calendar week without penalty.
  • Cancellations made within 24 hours of the appointment time require full payment for the session.

This policy helps protect the time set aside for you and ensures fairness for all clients.

How long and how frequent are sessions?

Most standard therapy sessions are 45 minutes.
Depending on the work we’re doing, sessions may range from 50 to 60 minutes once we’ve agreed on a treatment plan.
For EMDR or DBR (Deep Brain Re-Processing), sessions can be extended for 25 to 50 additional minutes.

For therapy to work, sessions should be once a week.

What issues do you help with?

I work with adults and couples around a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Relationship and communication struggles
  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm
  • Depression and feelings of stuckness
  • Trauma and unresolved past experiences
  • Family-of-origin issues
  • Life transitions and identity questions

Often, clients come in with one concern and discover that understanding deeper patterns brings relief across many areas of life.

Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

Yes, I offer both. Virtual sessions are available throughout Virginia, and in-person sessions are offered in Charlottesville, Virginia. We can talk about which option feels like the best fit for you.

How do I get started?

To begin, simply call or fill out the appointment request form on this website. I’ll reach out to discuss next steps and answer any questions you may have before scheduling.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy doesn’t follow a fixed timeline. Some people come in for focused work around a specific issue, while others choose to stay longer to explore deeper patterns and growth. We’ll check in along the way and adjust based on what feels helpful and meaningful for you.

How do I know if I should choose couples or individual therapy?

If the main struggle is within your relationship, couples therapy is often the best place to start. Most relationship issues involve both partners in some way — it’s rarely one person’s responsibility alone. Through couples work, we look at the patterns between you. At times, individual therapy may grow out of that work for one or both partners if it feels supportive.
